The Queen of the Missions

Founded in 1786 as the 10th of 21 California missions established by Spanish Franciscans, Mission Santa Barbara stands as a timeless testament to history, faith, and architectural beauty.

Our mission is to preserve and share the historical, cultural, and religious heritage of Mission Santa Barbara as an educational resource and spiritual center for all visitors.

Known as the "Queen of the Missions" for its architectural elegance and enduring significance, we welcome you to explore our story—a cornerstone of Santa Barbara's identity and a living piece of California's past.

Founded in 1786: A Legacy Unfolds

Mission Santa Barbara, the 10th of 21 California missions established by Spanish Franciscans, was founded on December 4, 1786. Known affectionately as the "Queen of the Missions," its story is a cornerstone of California's colonial history.

1786: The Founding

Father Fermín Lasuén establishes the mission, dedicating it to Saint Barbara. The first simple structures of wood, adobe, and thatch were built near the Santa Barbara Channel.

1812 & 1925: Resilience

The mission has faced and risen from devastation twice. A major earthquake in 1812 destroyed the early church. The iconic stone church, completed in 1820, was severely damaged by another earthquake in 1925 and meticulously rebuilt, standing as a testament to enduring faith and craftsmanship.

Architectural Milestone

The present church, with its twin bell towers and classical façade, is a unique example of Spanish Colonial and Neoclassical architecture. It set a new standard for mission design and remains the oldest building in Santa Barbara.

A Living Heritage

Unlike most California missions, Mission Santa Barbara has been continuously occupied by Franciscan friars since its founding. It serves as both an active parish and a profound museum, preserving artifacts, archives, and gardens that tell a continuous story of culture, faith, and community for over 235 years.

Today, we invite you to walk these historic grounds and connect with the living narrative of the Queen of the Missions.
